The paper is a clinicopathological review of 8 cases of Crohn's disease studied at La Paz (Bolivia). The fact that the disease seems to have a predilection for the colon and particularly the ileo cecal region is emphasized. It is more frequent in females at an average of 42.2 yr and an average duration of symptoms of 18.2 mth. In no case was the diagnosis made before examination of the operated specimen by the pathologist; it was mistaken earlier for acute appendicitis in 3 cases and in more advanced stages for an intraabdominal malignant neoplasm in almost every case. Tuberculoid granulomas were found only in half of the cases and the universal microscopic finding was a transmural inflammation of the affected intestinal segment. The treatment was surgical in all the cases and the control shows that three patients feel well without recurrences between 8 and 18 mth after surgery. The status of a further 3 is unknown because they were lost to followup, one suffered a recurrence after 4 yr and another died because of a pulmonary complication.
