Resumen
Inorganic arsenic (iAs) in drinking water is found in south regions of Bolivia, but human exposure and metabolism efficiency remain unknown. Inefficient methylation of arsenic with a low fraction of DMA in urine is a susceptibility factor for toxic effects. To elucidate arsenic exposure and metabolism in different Bolivian population groups, 74 women from communities (Llapallapani, Pampa-Aullagas, Quillacas) around Lake Poopó were recruited. Arsenic exposure was assessed by the sum of arsenic metabolites (iAs, MMA, DMA) in urine (U-As) using HPLC-HG-ICPMS. The efficiency of arsenic metabolism was expressed as the percentages of the metabolites. The median U-As was 62.2, 62.3 and 83.9 μg/L and the median%DMA was 83.0, 81.3 and 79.1% in Llapallapani, Pampa Aullagas and Quillacas, respectively. Women in Llapallapani had a significantly higher fraction of DMA. The women showed elevated arsenic exposure and an efficient arsenic metabolism, which might influence their risk for arsenic-related disease.
